Inlays & Onlays

Strong, Conservative
Inlays & Onlays For Damaged Teeth

Inlays and onlays are custom ceramic or composite pieces bonded to the tooth to repair bigger cavities, when a normal filling is not enough but a full crown is not yet required. They help save more natural tooth structure while adding strength.

  • Ideal for molars and premolars with large decay or old, failing fillings.
  • Made outside the mouth and then bonded, for a precise fit and strong seal.
  • More conservative than full crowns, preserving healthy tooth structure.

What are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations: they are crafted in a lab (or CAD‑CAM unit) and then bonded onto the tooth. Inlays sit within the grooves between the cusps, while onlays extend to cover one or more cusps as well as the chewing surface.

When are they recommended?

  • Large cavities where a normal filling would be weak or keep breaking.
  • Teeth that are cracked or heavily restored but still do not need a full crown.
  • When there is a need to strengthen chewing surfaces while preserving more natural tooth.
  • For better contact/shape and a more natural look compared with large fillings.

Materials & advantages

  • Ceramic / porcelain inlays and onlays blend with tooth colour and are highly aesthetic.
  • Composite or hybrid materials can be used when cost or flexibility is a priority.
  • Well‑bonded inlays/onlays can increase chewing strength compared to old fillings.
