How is Gum Disease treated?

Early and moderate gum disease is usually treated with non‑surgical therapy—deep scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line, often with local medicines or antibiotics. When pockets stay deep or bone loss is advanced, periodontal flap surgery is used to lift the gums, clean the roots and reshape bone before suturing the gum back.

Signs you may need gum treatment

  • Bleeding gums while brushing or eating, or persistent bad breath.
  • Gums pulling away from teeth, creating deep pockets.
  • Loose teeth or shifting gaps due to bone loss around roots.
  • Diabetes or other health issues linked with untreated periodontitis.

Non‑surgical vs Surgical care

  • Non‑surgical: scaling & root planing, local antibiotics, laser therapy to control infection.
  • Surgical: flap surgery to access roots, remove diseased tissue and reduce pocket depth.
  • Regular maintenance visits and home care are essential to keep gums healthy long‑term.
